What's the point of bringing home a nice new plant to decorate
your home if you leave it in the tacky, flimsy, black pot that it
comes in from the store? Besides looking bad, it is not good for
your plant to live in that type of container forever. The plant
will do much better with an indoor plant pot that is larger and
stronger, allowing more room for the roots to spread out and
grow.
Terra Cotta Pot
Decorative Shelving
The most common indoor plant pot is made from terra cotta. Terra
cotta pots have a very earthy, orange color. In fact, the words
terra cotta translate to 'baked earth'. These pots are made from
mineral rich clay. They typically have one hole in the bottom to
allow water to drain out. Because of this, a saucer will be
needed under the pot in your home. If you forget the saucer, you
will have quite a mess on your floor. Once you have the pot, you
can feel free to paint it yourself to match your decorative
style.
Sturdy Ceramics
Another option that you can use as a better looking, more
functional replacement to generic black store provided indoor
plant pot is a ceramic pot. They are always glazed because it
looks much better and makes the pot stronger. These pots come in
a wide variety of sizes. Make sure that you check to see if
there is a drainage hole, since this variety of pot does not
always have one. If it does not have a hole, it does not mean
that you can't use if for your indoor plants. You must, however,
make sure to use it for plants such as citrus trees that do not
need drainage holes.
Resin Materials
If you are worried about having your indoor plants in fragile
materials such as terra cotta or ceramics, a pot made out of
resin is a good option. Resin thick and sturdy, with a
plastic-like feel.. It comes in a variety of shapes and sizes
to fit almost any need.
Galvanize Yourself
An interesting option that will fit your home if you're looking
for a casual or country feel is a galvanized pot. Galvanized
pots are made from treated metal that is made to be rust-proof.
The best place to look for these pots are at the local feed and
tack store. They will most likely not come with drainage holes,
so if your plant requires that, you can drill some small holes in
the bottom yourself. Again, make sure you place a tray under the
pot if you do this.
When you are buying new houseplants, you should buy the containers at
the same time. If you wait, it may take you a lot of time to
move the plants out of the inadequate pots that they come in.
This will be detrimental to the plants in the long run, and to
the appearance of your home.
